Hal Cruttenden - Stand Up, Writer, Actor

Hal's Blog

I rode a scooter for the first time in my life yesterday and it was brilliant! I’m in Bermuda doing Just For Laughs shows with some really great comics – Jeremy Hotz (Canada), Alonzo Bodden and Godfrey (both US). I know this sound like sycophantic crap but it really is an honour to share a stage with these guys. The don’t just have great material but really know how to work a room. I wish the UK got to see acts like this more often and maybe there wouldn’t be quite so many British people snobbishly believing that we produce the best comedy in the world – we don’t..er..apart from me.

Anyway, back to the scooter! I’ve never felt so thrilled travelling at 50 kph. We got to see about half the island on our trip and it really is beautiful  – brightly coloured houses and lots of historical buildings set amongst lush vegitation and beautiful beaches (I’m doing some part time work for the Bermuda tourist board). You can see the British influence as well: red post boxes; identical style traffic lights to ours; and they drive on the left – hooray! The Canadian Just For Laughs people (Simon, Tania, Irene and Matt – lovely lovely people! Simon and Tania were on the Just For Laughs tour 2008 that I did) spent a lot of time fretting about being on the other side of the road. At one point, Matt (our sound guy) headed right into the path of oncoming traffic – Simon was screaming ‘On the left! Drive on the left!’ I was screaming at Simon, ‘Who’ll tech the show! If he dies can we still do it?!!” Luckily he pulled over in time and the show was great last night. My point is that it’s nice to be able to go abroad and not have to worry about staying on the correct side of the road and, while the Canadians and Americans here may moan, as I said on stage last night, ‘You leave the Empire, you pay the price.’

I need to go and do some relaxing now. I think I’ll have a little swim, then a snack and maybe I’ll be in good enough shape for tonight’s two shows! I’ve got to work for 40 minutes today. I’ll be exhausted.

  1. Hal,

I just left the Fairmont Southampton. You killed! Very funny indeed. Oy! Fatty!

I and my wife have been visiting for the past three weeks staying with friends who have lived here for three years. We just remarked how we enjoyed the Bermuda references in your, Alonzo’s and Jeremy’s material that we would not have understood had we just landed. Two-coloured poles for buses in opposite directions, wild chickens, Bermuda not showing up on the globe, musicians at the airport…all great stuff.

Thanks for a great show! I’ve seen you on TV, but now I’ll never forget your name, Hal Cruttenden.

    Regards,
    Ron
